Women face iron deficiency during pregnancy: Treatment and prevention

Iron deficiency during pregnancy is a common health concern. In fact, it is the most important cause of anaemia.

Anaemia is the underlying cause or contributing factor for 20 to 40% of maternal deaths in India, which accounts for 80% of maternal deaths due to anaemia in South Asia.

Anaemia is a condition in which a person does not have enough healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin (a protein) to carry oxygen to the body's tissues.

"It is important to understand that the demand for iron increases during pregnancy to support the growing baby and an increased demand for the mother's blood volume. If not treated timely, iron deficiency can lead to anaemia, which can have adverse effects on both the baby and the mother," said Dr Rahul Bhargava, Principal Director & Chief BMT, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.

If you know you are anaemic or have iron deficiency, the first thing that doctors advise is not to self-medicate.
